Letters, letters, letters

To the Editor:

Several weeks ago, I received a letter stating that the middle school was 70 years old. This is false.

We came to Sisters in 1933. The only school at that time was a two-story, frame building attached to the existing gymnasium.

I attended the eighth grade through four years of high school in this building. The bottom floor was for the grade school and the top section was for the high school. I graduated in 1938.

My oldest two children also attended this school. My oldest son, Michael Smith, graduated in 1958. My daughter, Sunny Phillips, went there three years, then went one year in the new middle school (called elementary back then). She graduated in 1959.

The old high school facing Cascade Avenue is 51 years old.

I figure the middle school is 46 years old.

Also, there was another small school called the Earl Russell Grade School. It was constructed close to the Camp Polk Road east of the old high school. It just went to the fourth grade. Students then went to the middle school.

My father, George Carroll, and my youngest brother, Orville, built a gymnasium close to the Earl Russell School. It was later transported to the area behind the old Barclay Logging offices.

Shirley Miller (Letters to the Editor, March 14) left out the real dangers of encouraging deer to live in the city.

Deer are wild animals with sharp hooves. Several dogs were injured by deer last year. Will it take an injury to a child before anything is done?

What if the tame deer draw cougar into the city? There will be a huge outcry and the cougar will be killed, but the deer will stay. Will a child be killed before the cougar is?

I think the entire herd of tame deer that live in Sisters should be eliminated. If you want to have deer for pets, then build a 12 foot fence and keep them in YOUR yard.

What an absolute treat was this years Sisters Act Talent Show! We as a family look forward to this event every year -- not only is it a great fund-raiser; it is a wonderful opportunity to see the amazing talent we have right here in Sisters.

It is a delight to see local dads form a band for this one night. It also is a perfect chance for parents to see their kids on-stage performing for family and friends.

And isn't Sisters lucky to have such a talented family as the Kolb Family who get together every year and show us how to really have fun together as a family. If you knew their story, you'd know how special and giving they are.

Thank you to Theresa Slavkovsky for this gift to the community. We'll take the Sisters Act over any awards show any day -- where else can you see Johnny Cash and Elvis perform on the same stage!
