National
Guard work valuable

School

The troops of the 1249th Engineering Battalion of the Oregon Army National Guard have packed up their tents and are heading back to their civilian lives.
They leave behind thousands of dollars worth of work completed in the Sisters area.
According to Sisters School District Construction Projects Manager Bob Martin, the value of the troops' work on school district projects is $447,000.
The troops buried old concrete and hauled away debris on the school district's Lundgren Mill property at the end of North Pine Street. They also leveled and compacted the ground.
All that work, Martin said, was done to engineering specifications and under the supervision of the engineering firm Kleinfelder, Inc. The work had to be done before the property is marketed and, if the Guard hadn't done it, the district would have had to hire it done.
The property is currently tied up in land use proceedings.
The school district gave one very valuable service in return for the troops' work: It opened the high school showers for use by the Guard.

The Guard battalion held an awards ceremony at Sisters High School on
Wednesday, June 20, its cap their two- week annual training exercise.
While in Sisters, the troops performed tactical engineering exercises
while undertaking several improvement projects for the school district
and Sisters Ranger District (see The Nugget, June 20, page 1).
