Attack echoes across nation

Far away from likely terrorist targets, people in Sisters nevertheless felt the shock and fear instilled by an apparently well-coordinated terrorist strike against the World Trade Center in New York City and against the Pentagon in Washington, D.C.

Airline travel, including to and from the Redmond Airport was shut down indefinitely Tuesday morning. Bend Airport also grounded all aircraft.

Phil Arends of Desert Wings Travel Services said --with relief -- that he did not have any clients in New York Tuesday.

Arends said he is simply telling clients to sit tight, rent a hotel room and stay out of airports until the situation clarifies.

School activities were canceled and students formed an impromptu prayer group around the American flag which drew about 150 students.

Students met in assembly and in small groups and counselors were made available to staff and students upset by the events.

A community vigil was held at Sisters Village Green at noon on Tuesday.
