Sisters
aids victims of attacks
Community organizations and individuals
from Sisters continued to rally in support of victims of the terror attacks
on New York City and Washington, D.C. on September 11.
Sisters carried on with its
day-to-day life -- more adorned than usual with red, white and blue --
and awaited the military response that appears inevitable.
Several fund-raising drives
have been launched to aid victims.
The Sisters-Camp Sherman Fire
Department will distribute ribbons and collect donations for the families
of the fallen New York firefighters. Fire department personnel will be
stationed at businesses in the City of Sisters on Saturday, September
29, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Donations may be made directly
at that time. People wishing to donate before or after that time may contact
the Sisters-Camp Sherman Rural Fire Protection District at 549-0771 or
come to the main station located at 301 S. Elm Street.
The Kiwanis International
Foundation has created a Kiwanis-family fund -- the "911 Victims Children's
Fund," which will be used to aid the children of the countless victims
of the September 11 terror attacks.
The fund will be administered
by the Kiwanis International Foundation and is endorsed by the Kiwanis
community worldwide.
According to Sisters Kiwanis
President Jim Mitchell, "fund administrators will work with the New York
and Capital Districts and the clubs in the affected areas to ensure that
contributions will be directed to the highest and best uses possible."
All donations are 100 percent
tax-deductible and no salaries, premiums, or administrative expenses come
out of the donations.
Mitchell, who serves as Lt.
Governor of Kiwanis Division 78, has asked all Kiwanis clubs in Central
Oregon to participate. Public contributions can be made to The Kiwanis
Club of Sisters, PO Box 868, Sisters, OR 97759.
Call Jim Mitchell at 549-1590
for further information.
A pancake breakfast will be
held on Sunday, October 7, from 8 to 11:30 a.m. at the Camp Sherman Community
Hall. Diners will be asked to contribute a donation to one of the New
York City relief organizations.
The breakfast will consist
of pancakes, sausage, eggs, applesauce, coffee and juice. The event is
sponsored by the youth of Camp Sherman. For more information call Toni
Foster, 595-6203.
The Aid Association for Lutherans
Organization has designated $1 million dollars in matching funds for the
terrorist victims.
On September 30, Shepherd
of the Hills Lutheran Church in Sisters will have a Special Collection
Coffee Hour for this program. All funds collected will be distributed
through ELCA (Evangelical Lutheran Church in America) Domestic Disaster
Response "September 11 Attack" and are tax deductible.
Make checks payable to AAL
-- Branch 9212.
For more information call
Pastor Ron Gregg, 549-5831 or Howard Dugdale, 595-2134.
