Sisters gets look at school designs
By Jim Cornelius

Citizens shared their thoughts on school design with architects Monday night.

The taxpayers who will be paying for a new Sisters High School got a first look at designs for the facility they have purchased at a workshop on Monday evening, September 24.

Architect Scott Steele and his design team displayed elevation drawings and schematics for several different design possibilities.

Visitors examined the drawings, offered ideas and asked questions of the architects and listened to the ideas behind the designs.

The designs presented both single-story and two-story layouts. All were built around a "commons" area that acts as a kind of hub for the school. From the commons, students access classroom areas, the gym and a theater. The commons would act as a foyer for the theater.

In a discussion after the workshop, school board members indicated that they favor designs with a single "grand entrance" to the commons area. They were less impressed with a design that created a "splayed" classroom wing that created an outside courtyard.

Board members who previously favored single-story design are now more open tow two stories.

The school board will refine its design preferences and give clearer direction to the architects at their next meeting October 8.

The architects will then begin more detailed design work.

The district plans to go out to bid on the project in March or April of next year.
