Talent
show is getting its "act" together
The ever-popular Sisters Act
is now taking applications for performances for the 2002 show. The theme
of next year's talent show is Sisters Act Celebrates America.
"We are looking for acts that
celebrate America, both past and present," said Sisters Act coordinator,
Theresa Slavkovsky. "It doesn't necessarily have to be patriotic. We have
a committee that previews all acts to make sure they are family appropriate."
The show doesn't go on until
March 9, but it is so popular that performing slots book up early.
Sisters Act got its start
in 1994 when Good Samaritan Ministries, a non-profit organization, flew
a school director over from Uganda to further his education in areas such
as first aid, counseling, and business. The organization needed money
to cover his airfare, so they held a fund-raiser at the elementary school.
Poetry reading was the main offering of the evening, but the event was
so popular that Good Samaritan Ministries decided to make it a yearly
affair.
"We now send half the money
we raise to a high school in Masaka, Uganda," said Slavkovsky. "The other
half we donate to Sisters High School. Last year we were able to give
around $1,600 to the art and drama department, as well as the Leadership
Fund. The money we sent to Africa was used to help with construction."
Applications can be obtained
from Theresa Slavkovsky and must be completed and turned in no later than
January 31. Each applicant will receive a letter inviting him or her to
perform their act before the Sisters Act committee in early February.
Props and music must be ready at that time.
Each act may have up to 15
performers on stage and may be a maximum of five minutes in length. The
Sisters Act committee will make the final decision as which acts will
be in the show. For information call 549-1149 or 549-1608.
