School groundbreaking set for May 1
A groundbreaking ceremony for
the new Sisters High School has been scheduled for May 1, 2002.
"I am planning a big party,"
said Katie Gregg, Facilities and Construction Secretary with the Sisters
School District.
"At 4 p.m., we meet at the
high school cafeteria."
Gregg said the school district
has asked Governor John Kitzhaber, state senators and representative and
other elected officials to the ceremony. Some will no doubt find the occasion
suitable for a speech.
There will be a visual presentation
from the architects, then the five school board members and superintendent
will take "six lovely gold shovels," according to Gregg, and break ground
for the new school.
The school is tentatively
set for completion in August, 2003.
After the groundbreaking,
dignitaries one and all will return to cafeteria for refreshments and
entertainment from the high school Jazz Band. Students also designed the
invitations.
"I tried to utilize the talent
at our school to keep costs minimal and show the community how talented
our students are," said Gregg.
Direct invitations will go
out April 15, Gregg said, with a general invitation to the community published
in local newspapers.
The clearing of the new school
site should begin this week and heavy equipment should move in around
the middle of May to begin excavating the site.
The school is set to open
in 2004.
