Boys get into the swing of golf

The Sisters boys varsity golf team finished the first week of play winning two tournaments outright and providing tough competition for the local heavyweights in the other tournament.

On Tuesday, April 2, the Outlaws squared off against the Capital Conference at the Arrowhead course in Molalla.

When the dust had settled, Sisters had won by a whopping 49 strokes, shooting 306 in the process.

Molalla, whose home course is Arrowhead, was second with a 355 score.

The dominating performance was led by medallist Jonathan Green's 69.

"He shot a 31 on the front nine, which is quite possibly a course record," Coach Jeff Barton said. "He has been playing some great golf."

His effort was complemented by Christian Green's 76; followed by Zach Sweeney (79), David Green (82), and Justin Little (87).

The Outlaws then went to Meadow Lakes in Prineville for the Crook County Tournament, held Friday, April 5.

"We have a little work to do -- we played okay," Coach Barton said. "We took fourth place, but we were only six strokes off the lead. Everybody was bunched together."

Redmond took top honors with a team score of 315, followed by Bend (318), Summit (320), Sisters (321), Hermiston (331), Crook County (345), Mtn. View (354), Madras (358) and Burns (385).

Jonathan Green led the Outlaws by carding a 75.

Hot on his heels were twin younger brothers David and Christian, each shooting 79.

Adam Perry finished with 88, Zach Sweeney had 97.

"It was good competition for us," Barton said. "We learned that we can compete with the bigger schools in our area, and second, we learned that we can't get complacent."

Saturday, April 6 saw the boys from Central Oregon get back on top, as they traveled to Mallard Creek in Sweet Home to take on six schools from the Valley.

Coach Barton was pleased that Sisters took the team honors with a 305 score, 16 strokes ahead of second place North Eugene's 321.

"They're a 4A school with a good team," he noted.

Wilsonville finished in third place at 325, followed by North Salem (330), Lebanon (342), Sweet Home (363), and Sandy (405).

Christian Green was the individual medallist, with a one-under-par 71. Jonathan Green finished with a 75.

"Jon didn't play well on the first nine, but he rallied and really picked it up on the last nine," Barton said.

David Green was right behind at 76. Adam Perry (83) and Zach Sweeney (84) rounded out the scoring.
