Golfers
take second in state
Even Tiger Woods doesn't win
every time he takes to the links. So it was that the Sisters boys varsity
golf team finished in second place at the state tournament, held at Eagle
Crest on Monday and Tuesday, May 13-14.
The Outlaws put up a spirited
defense of their state crown, but could not overcome a six- stroke deficit
after day one.
"It was between us and Tillamook,
just as we thought it would be," said Coach Jeff Barton. "On the first
day, they got an early start and played in virtually windless conditions.
We got off later in the day, and played with the wind gusting between
40 and 45 miles per hour.
"Our kids played hard, but
the wind just wreaked havoc with our scores," Barton said. "Even the Tillamook
coach said that was the deciding factor."
Christian Green led the Outlaws
in round one by shooting 80, "a darn good score for the conditions," according
to the coach.
He was followed by Jonathan
Green at 81, David Green (83), Adam Perry (83), and Justin Little (89).
"Adam shooting 83 on the first
day kept us close," said Barton. "That really helped us."
He also noted that the first
day team score of 327 was the second-highest round that the Outlaws had
shot all year.
Sisters made up four strokes
on day two, to draw within two strokes of Tillamook. The second day was
warmer, and wind was not a factor.
It was David Green's turn
to lead the defending state champs. He turned in a 74, followed by Christian
Green (76), Jonathan Green (77), Justin Little (85), and Adam Perry (93).
When it was over, Tillamook
had a two-day total of 637, with Sisters on their heels at 639.
