Local angler launches protection campaign Camp Sherman
resident John Judy has launched a small campaign he hopes will steer anglers
away from fish spawning sites.
Judy calls the campaign "I PASS."
"I PASS is a simple acronym meaning, 'I Pledge to Avoid Spawning Sites,"
Judy said. "It's pretty straightforward. To take the pledge, just learn
to identify spawning areas and if you think you are in one, move away."
Judy says anglers should know and look for signs that identify spawning
sites. These include:
Judy notes that spawning fish are usually concentrated, easier to locate and that fishing for them is often more successful, especially for large fish. He believes the spawning fish are weaker, however, and if they are pestered enough, the spawn may be interrupted. He also suggests that wading through the nest site to get to the spawning fish can kill eggs and young fry still sheltered in the gravel. "Some argue these damages are inconsequential, and to an extent I might agree," Judy said. "Over-harvest or habitat degradation might be worse. But targeting spawners should be avoided if for no other reason than to show respect for the fish." |
