Iron horses ride across pasture
By Jim Cornelius

A multi-piece sculpture graces the pasture at the Lazy Z.

A herd of iron horses, accompanied by dogs and riders, has been caught galloping across the pasture of the Lazy Z Ranch just east of Sisters.

The piece is the creation of sculptor Brian Bain of Culver. Vicki Herring, who works with the Lazy Z trail riding operation, says the horse sculpture was inspired by similar works seen by herself and ranch owner David Herman in travels across the West and in Canada.

"We just thought it would be fun to have something of our own," Herring said.

The sculpture is, indeed, uniquely their own. The horses were modeled after Lazy Z and Black Butte Stables steeds -- they are not just generic horses.

"It depicts our horses, and that's important to us," Herring said.

The sculpture is strung out heading west along the fence line south of the highway. Herring noted that the sculpture may be moved.
