New internet policy set at library

Sisters Library instituted a new internet use policy, starting Thursday, July 25.

Library patrons 17 years or older will need their library card to access the internet computers in the library.

Persons 16 years or younger will need a signed internet access permission form along with a valid library card to access the library internet stations.

"Parental/guardian consent is now mandatory for all children under 17 years of age to have full access to all internet stations," said Michael Gaston, Deschutes Public Library District Director.

Adult patrons may now choose unfiltered or filtered internet access for themselves or minors in their care. A "No Access (Blocked)" choice is also available for adults caring for minors.

Guests (without library card) may obtain internet access passes from the library staff.

There are currently four public use internet-connected computers at Sisters Library. Access is limited to one hour per day on three of these units and is monitored by computer program.

A fourth express station is available for accessing e-mail and is limited to 15-minute use.

"When I'm in Denver I like to check my e-mail at the Denver Library," noted John Anderson, Sisters Library Advisory Council member. "I'd like to extend that same courtesy to visitors in Sisters."

Average attendance is about 300 patrons during summer days at Sisters Library and computer use can be heavy. Library staff hope more internet stations will be available shortly.

The library website may also be accessed from home at http://www.dpls.lib.or.us/. This offers complete access to library catalog DPLS holdings and other valuable information.

Besides Sisters, other DPLS branches are located in Bend, La Pine, Redmond and Sunriver. Patrons' library cards are valid at any of these locations.
