Cache Mountain fire update
By Jim Cornelius

Sunset filtered by smoke from Cache Mountain fire

The Cache Mountain fire some 18 miles west of Sisters had burned 634 acres by Thursday morning, July 25, according to an aerial infrared survey Wednesday evening.

Lightning strikes late Tuesday afternoon, July 23, touched off the blaze, which quickly sent a column of smoke into the air as local residents watched the flames creep down the eastern slope of the ridge.

According to Central Oregon Interagency Dispatch in Prineville, the fire was about 2.5 miles south of Suttle Lake and seven miles west of Black Butte Ranch. It was 30 percent contained on Thursday.

Suttle Lake United Methodist Youth Camp was evacuated voluntarily and many campers decided to leave the area. However, no evacuation orders have been issued.

According to Central Oregon Interagency Dispatch, the weather forecast is favorable for fighting the fire, with mild winds and relatively cool temperatures.

Forest Service roads in the area have been closed, but Highway 20 remains open with a smoke advisory.
