New
gallery opens in Sisters
The latest addition
to Sisters' stable of art galleries is the Jennifer Lake Miller Gallery
in the new retail space on Cascade Avenue adjacent to Coldwell Banker Reed
Bros. Realty.
The gallery is an exclusive
outlet for Miller's work. Paintings, tiles, note cards, lamps and vases
adorn the walls and floor displays of this fresh, new space. Also included
are limited edition pieces of furniture made by her husband Les and decorated
with Miller's art.
A resident of Powell Butte,
Miller has long wanted to open a gallery in Sisters. When the new building
on Cascade was completed, she was approached to occupy a portion of it.
"I'm thrilled to finally be
in Sisters," she said. "This is a good fit for my art."
Miller's style is termed Primitive
Americana Art. It is characterized by the bold use of color and minute
detail. The paintings are of scenes familiar to most residents of the
Pacific Northwest.
There is a series entitled
"Celebrating Oregon" which includes scenes of Sisters and the quilt show.
Calling herself "an art teacher's
nightmare," Miller has had no formal art training. She did, however, grow
up in a family which was involved in and encouraged the arts.
Allowed to experiment and
find her own way, Miller began painting commissioned portraits of private
homes. Savvy in the ways of marketing, Miller branched out and has become
internationally known for her images of the Northwest.
She still does those home
portraits but is booked about a year in advance.
The most exciting recent development
for Miller and her husband has been creating the furniture.
"We wanted something we could
do together," she said. "We both work on the designs."
Each limited edition piece
is done completely by hand. The pieces have a theme which brings the art
in them to life. Presently, the collection includes a blanket box, an
armoire, shelves, and a bookcase. For more information call 549-1295.
