Rotarian helps stranded student
Elson Strahan of Vancouver, Wash., helped out a young Rotarian who was a long way from home last month, earning the gratitude of Sisters Rotary Club members. Ivo Gervasi flew in from Switzerland late last month to join his American host family, Jeff and Heather Wester of Sisters as an exchange student. The young man's flight into Portland was delayed and he missed his Redmond connection -- the last flight of the evening. He was stranded in a strange country, unsure where to turn. Strahan, a Rotarian himself and a passenger on Gervasi's Portland flight, took note of Gervasi's Rotary Youth Exchange blazer -- and his predicament. He gave Gervasi a place to stay the night, then drove him back to the airport on Saturday morning to catch his flight to Redmond. Rotary members saluted Strahan for living up to the club's spirit of "Service Above Self." |
