Girls
soccer team loses two in a row The Lady Outlaws
soccer team lost 5-4 in a hard fought battle at North Marion on Wednesday,
September 25.
Sisters found themselves down
1-0 early in the game when an attempted save by Keeper Kira Durand deflected
off her leg and the ball slid into the net.
Within five minutes Krista
Pagano crossed the ball to Rose Slavkovsky, who at 30 feet out booted
the ball in to score and tie the match at 1-1.
The game remained tied until
Slavkovsky centered the ball to Pagano inside the goal box. Pagano drilled
the ball into the left corner to gain the lead for Sisters at 2-1.
The Huskies were able to tie
the match toward the end of the first half off a deflection right at the
net.
Sisters scored a goal early
in the second half when Pagano scored from the corner of the goal box,
off an assist from Minique Yost. The Outlaws regained the lead 3-2.
Midway through the second
half the Huskies scored three goals within eight minutes. The goals came
off a penalty shot, a head butt at the net, and an indirect kick, which
soared over the top of Durand's head.
The three quick goals seemed
to take the wind out of the Sisters team, and gave the Huskies a 5-3 lead.
In the last minutes of the
game the Outlaws put strong pressure on the Huskies. Pagano, unassisted,
knocked in another goal and pulled Sisters to within one, at 5-4.
Time ran out before the Outlaws
could tie.
Coach Lee Bellahdid felt the
girls played hard, but as a team are still weak on the defensive end.
"Our forwards also need to
finish their shots," he said. "We're getting plenty of opportunities,
but are just not capitalizing on them."
Bellahdid praised Emily Clasen
for her play.
"Emily really held their left
forward and did a great job marking up on her," he said. "She prevented
her from scoring several goals."
Earlier in the week, on Monday,
the Outlaws lost the league opener 4-0 at home against Western Mennonite.
"I felt like we gave the game
away," Bellahdid said. "We didn't play hard and unfortunately I only had
one sub. Our defense has been slow and as a result we gave up goals."
