Student wins bike in fire program drawing

Christopher Burdick, age six, is the proud owner of a new bicycle -- courtesy of the Sisters-Camp Sherman Rural Fire Protection District.

Sisters Elementary School students took home and filled out a questionnaire on fire prevention as part of a region-wide "Firebusters" program.

The questionnaire covered issues such as fire safety, escape plans, smoke detectors and the like. These issues were discussed on a special segment of KTVZ News, providing answers to questions.

The students brought the questionnaires back and they were submitted for a drawing. A better than 50 percent turnout would have earned Sisters Elementary School $500; however, only 44 percent of the questionnaires were returned.

Several students in various grades won T-shirts, but the grand prize went to the kindergartner.

Sisters Fire Chief Don Rowe noted how supportive the students were of each other, enthusiastically cheering each winner.

Christopher's mother Mary assured The Nugget that the boy can certainly handle his new wheels.

"Of course!" she exclaimed. "He's been riding a two-wheeler since he was three!"
