A large festive crowd honored the 28 Sisters Library volunteers at last week's Christmas party held at St. Edward's Catholic Church parish hall.

Nearly 100 people enjoyed dining on Chef Rod McDonald's ham with associated potato dishes, salads and veggies after a relaxing social hour.

Friends of the Library had made holiday cookie houses for each dinner table, which added to the gaily decorated hall. Sandy McDonald was in charge of the evening's events.

After dinner, storytellers Bonnie McNeil and her daughter Heather provided entertainment. An appreciative audience enjoyed their creative rendition of the "Twelve Days of Christmas."

Library Manager Peg Bermel introduced and individually thanked every library volunteer and presented each with a gift of appreciation.

"Our library circulated 65,000 books last year and we would not be able to do as good a job if it were not for our volunteers," Bermel told the audience.

Besides re-shelving books, volunteers also clean and repair books, sort newspapers and magazines and help in day-to-day library operations.

Outstanding 20-year library volunteer veterans Mary Smith and Ruth Paul were specially rewarded with lovely patterned throws for their generous efforts over the years.

Bermel also introduced library advisory council chairperson Paul Bennett and his committee members.

The evening ended with Bermel paying tribute to her outstanding library team and Sandy McDonald. An appreciative audience gave McDonald a standing ovation for her work.

Each dinner table had a winner chosen for taking home one of the lovely cookie houses as a memorable Christmas gift.

Guests leaving the hall and moving on towards 2003 were reminded that the 2,600- square-foot Sisters Library is scheduled for an expansion later in the decade. A committee is presently accessing potential building sites for the proposed new 8,000 square foot library at an estimated cost of $1.4 million.
