Forest Service proposes Eyerly salvage The Sisters Ranger
District is proposing salvage logging of commercial timber on approximately
4,330 acres of the Eyerly Fire area 20 miles north of Sisters.
The agency is looking for public comment on the proposal, which includes
two miles of temporary roads. According to a Forest Service letter, "Approximately
32 miles of local system roads used for logging operations would be ...
(obliterated)... or (closed) after project activities are completed."
The letter states that loggers will not salvage in riparian reserves
or habitat conservation areas, nor in roadless areas.
The Eyerly Fire started on July 9, 2002, and burned some 23,573 acres.
Many acres were severely scorched by the fire, which burned during a
heatwave with triple-digit temperatures. Several vacation homes also burned.
Public comments should be made by March 1.
