Local students enter history competition Students from
Black Butte School in Camp Sherman will carry on their tradition of competing
in Oregon's History Day competition.
District Finals for the annual
competition are scheduled for Saturday, March 1 at Jefferson County Middle
School in Madras. Seventy students, representing four Central Oregon schools,
will participate in this stage of the competition, with the district winners
moving on to the state finals in Salem in April.
Students will present papers,
displays and presentations on this year's theme: "Rights and Responsibilities
in History."
The Black Butte School contingent
will face Jefferson County Middle School, Madras High School and Sunriver
Preparatory School.
This district contest is coordinated
by the Oregon Historical Society and a consortium of local teachers, parents
and volunteers from Central Oregon with support from the Jefferson County
School District.
Oregon's History Day is designed
to draw young people into exploring the past. Participants present their
original historical research findings, individually or as a group, in
papers, exhibit displays, media presentations, and performances.
Students participate in a
series of competitions at regional, state and national levels.
Winners from the district
competition are eligible to compete in the state contest, and may advance
to the National History Day competition in Washington, D.C. Oregon's State
History Day competition will be held on Saturday, April 12, at Willamette
University in Salem. |
