Gregg Geser of Sisters won the Race Across Oregon (RAO) last weekend, May 31-June 1.

The 49-year-old contractor finished the grueling 538-mile bicycle race in 35 hours and 25 minutes, 45 minutes ahead of second place finisher Enrico DeAngeli of Italy.

The race began at the Portland Airport and described a giant loop through Tygh Valley to Fossil, to Long Creek to Prineville and finishing at Timberline Lodge.

The description of the stage between Tygh Valley and Fossil on the website is illustrative:

"The climb is worth it because in a few more miles you'll begin a steep zig-zag descent into Maupin. The descent isn't worth it because you, of course, have to climb out of the Deschutes River Valley. You accomplish this via the 25 mile climb up Bakeoven Road to Bakeoven Summit at elevation 3,516.

"After a quick downhill, you'll find yourself at a T intersection. A left turn takes you to the bustling metropolis of Shaniko -- population 25 -- pick up Route 218 at Ken's Place. This road is an absolute blast to ride. No traffic and some awesome hairpin descents.

"It's 36 miles between Antelope and Fossil. There are no flat sections.

"'Nuff said."

Geser raced in the solo division; there are several team categories.
