Grant funds inventory of homes
By Jim Cornelius

Nicole Nathan is taking a snapshot in time -- literally.

Nathan is working for the Deschutes County Community Development Department (DCCDD) under a federal grant to inventory pre-1960s homes in Sisters before many of those homes disappear in the face of redevelopment.

According to Pat Kliewer of DCCDD, Nathan has been walking the neighborhoods of Sisters, taking black-and-white, archive-quality photographs of homes to preserve a historical record of Sisters.

The project was triggered by a sense among city and county planners that the advent of a sewer system will profoundly change Sisters' appearance. As land values increase, landowners will find it more feasible to tear down old houses for redevelopment.

The project runs through August 15.

Volunteers are needed to help round out the historical record. People with old photographs are encouraged to bring them to City Hall, where they can be scanned while the owner waits.

Nathan is also interested in talking to people who have stories of the "old days" -- which, for the purposes of this project, is all the way up to 1960.

For more information contact Nathan at 350-6563 or Kliewer at 388-7927.
