Letters, letters, letters
The Nugget welcomes contributions from its readers, which must include the writer's name, address and phone number. Letters to the Editor is an open forum for the community and contains unsolicited opinions not necessarily shared by the Editor. The Nugget reserves the right to edit, omit, respond or ask for a response to letters submitted to the Editor. Letters should be no longer than 300 words. The Nugget has received dozens of letters regarding our online coverage of the B&B Fire at www.nuggetnews.com. The Nugget staff appreciates the kind words we have received.

We are gratified that the web site has become a useful tool to inform our readers -- some of them in distant corners of the globe -- about critical events affecting our community.

To the Editor:

I am sure everyone in Sisters knows that the Rodeo Grounds is probably not the most ideal camping spot in that it is very hot and very dusty.

I find it deplorable that the people who are risking their lives to protect our property are not in a better location.

You would think that Black Butte Ranch, Cascade Estates, or someone that has a better piece of ground would come forward and offer their land as a temporary headquarters.

I really don't think it is too much to ask for the hard work these people have done to save our forests.

To The Editor:

I would like to express my great appreciation and wonderment at the outpouring of support and donations for the firefighters. We have even received support from people who are not residents of Sisters but keep in touch with this community through www.nuggetnews.com.

The firefighting community has been very blessed by our local efforts in providing them with badly needed basics that allow them to be more efficient in their efforts.

Invariably we hear comments from these firefighters that they have never experienced such support before.

We are planning another support rally for the fighters to hand out more supplies such as underwear, socks, travel sized soaps, shampoo, paperback books, pocket flashlights, earplugs, sleeping mats, etc. We are still accepting donations during business hours here at my office across from Papandrea's Pizzeria.

At this time, I am unable to secure a time for the rally with the fire Command Center. I am hopeful that we will be able to hold the rally later this week in the evening. If anyone is interested in being at the rally, they may contact my office at 540-9486 for the time and place that will be determined.

Sincerely,

Dr. Mark Francis

To the Editor:

As a resident of Camp Sherman, my husband and I would like to thank all the wonderful friends, firemen, Jefferson and Deschutes County Sheriff's deputies and the Red Cross for their outstanding support and assistance.

The shelter and property protection provided by the different agencies has eased our anxiety.

We especially want to thank our dear friends Bob and Shawn Taylor. They have always been strong supporters of Sisters and they are currently a support for our neighbor and us during this crisis.

They took in my neighbor with her two cats, my husband and I with our dog and offered a room to another neighbor. When we were evacuated the second time they were waiting for us at the Camp Sherman Junction and whisked us back to their home. We are very blessed to have these very generous friends.

Thank you for your overwhelming concern and support friends, family and community.

Sincerely,

Emma Sivers

This is one more item for the city council and planning department to consider.

With the new growth we are experiencing in the city the city council in conjunction with the post office need to revisit and address mail delivery in town. As of about a week ago there was a waiting list to get a post office box or mail box at either the post office or The Pony Express.

Some people I have talked to want to get their mail at the post office through a P.O. box and that is all right but a lot of people like myself have only one alternative to getting mail through by a fee-paid P.O. box and that alternative as I see it is to get my mail through general delivery while standing in line every day and this is NOT ACCEPTABLE.

Most city people did not know the P.O. boxes were fee-free if no other postal delivery was offered. I had a fee-free box for two years. This year when my box fee was due I was informed I was no longer eligible for such a box and so I ask why. I was informed by postal employees the city council had decided to drop this issue some time ago. I was informed door-to-door delivery was cost prohibitive.

The next alternative is to have cluster mail boxes offered to all current city residents and placed conveniently around town.

When one home is removed from a city lot and that lot is divided so a minimum of four homes or four addresses is allowed you increase mail needs by 75 percent per building lot.

For anyone new coming into the area the only alternative is that you get your mail through general delivery.

To the Editor:

After several years of looking and waiting for housing in Central Oregon, on September 1, I was in my new Habitat for Humanity house!

There are just not enough words to thank all those who have worked so long and hard to make this possible.

I can't begin to name all the names, but you know who you are. Besides Sharlene, Marie and Darla at the Habitat office, my wonderful partners Carolyn Gabrielson and Ted Jones, and the Girl Scout, Ashley Lanier of Bend, there were students who came on breaks, RVers and many others who contributed so much.

A special thanks to Ashley who helped paint my house and then left a lovely basket of welcoming gifts!

A favorite poem of E. Markham says:

"There is a destiny that makes us brothers/ None goes his way alone/ All that we give into the lives of others/ Comes back into our own."

These people should be truly blessed in that case. Sisters is indeed fortunate to have such a team of volunteers and others willing to make housing a possibility.

Thank you, too, all of you locals who support the Habitat Thrift Store and make things happen!

Sincerely,

Linn Watson

Please help me find my family's heirlooms.

Items belonging to Gary Bickford were removed from 66265 Jericho Road near Sisters, Oregon in June. It is uncertain by whom or why they were removed, but it was done without permission.

Certain items are of great sentimental value, in particular the entire family collection of photos and films dating back over 60 years and old books that have been in the family for over 100 years.

Besides the family items, some of the corporate records for FXT Corp. were in file cabinets and credenza. A large amount of construction, mechanic's and gardening tools, including various power tools and some computer items and parts were removed.

Various furnishings and rare old books might show up in antique stores or bookstores. If you have any information regarding any of the items, please contact me at garyb@fxt.com as soon as possible.

A reward of up to $500 will be forthcoming for information that will help me recover these items.
