Out-of-control
debris fire guts trailers
"It looks like it was a legal open burn," said Captain Thornton Brown of the Sisters-Camp Sherman Rural Fire Protection District. "The wind kicked up and some sparks got into the grass and the fire just took off from there." Fortunately, the structures that erupted into flame were merely an outbuilding and two trailers, which were slated to be torn down anyway, Brown reported. A nearby fence also sustained some damage. The fire alarm came in at 12:04 p.m. and a total of 14 firefighters responded to the scene. Flames were roiling in an old wood outbuilding and in both trailers as the firefighters hooked up hoses and moved in to attack the fire. Fire crews swiftly got the upper hand on the blaze. Brown said that the fire illustrated the dangers of burning, even when it is legal. "Even though open burning is allowed, you still have to be really careful because it's really dry out there," he said. Brown noted that wind, in addition to fanning flames, contributes to dry conditions. Burning season is underway on the Sisters-Camp Sherman, Cloverdale and Black Butte Ranch Rural Fire Protection Districts. All three districts opened yard burning on October 17. Check with the appropriate district for permit and regulations information: Sisters, 549-0771; Cloverdale, 548-4815; BBR, 595-2288. |
