New bridge will span Squaw Creek
By Torri Barco

A new bridge, a new upscale subdivision, a new road to disperse traffic and a bridge over Squaw Creek are in the works for Sisters.

The city is planning to build a 1,450-foot road connecting East Cascade Avenue and Highway 126. The road will run along the east side of the partially-built Squaw Creek subdivision, past Sisters Elementary School and over Squaw Creek. One-third of Squaw Creek's planned 106 lots have been completed, said city planner Neil Thompson.

The development is a hallmark of the times: Sisters population and its number of building permits is growing at a rate of more than 10 percent each year, according to city reports.

This new street, which might be called "Creekside, is needed to help disperse traffic from the often backed-up Cascade Avenue/Locust Street intersection around school hours, Thompson said. The Cascade Avenue/Locust Street intersection is currently the only entryway to transport kids to and from the elementary school. The new street will generate better traffic flow by allowing cars to enter through one street and leave through another, Thompson said.

The new street will also accommodate traffic generated by the new subdivision.

Thompson said it is estimated that each house in the subdivision will generate about 10 trips per day (five coming and five going), which means Creekside will carry about 1,060 trips per day.

Thompson said road construction should be completed by the end of next year. He said he hopes the bridge will be built by October 15, 2004 to avoid construction over the creek during winter months.

Thompson said there are no details yet on the aesthetics of the bridge, but he said it will be scenic, similar to the bridge on South Locust which crosses Squaw Creek.

Bruce Forbes, the developer of Squaw Creek subdivision, will pay 90 percent of the $240,000 cost to build the road. Nearby property owners will pay the rest.
