Timber salvage sale

The U.S. Forest Service is accepting bids on the "Halloween Blowdown Salvage" timber sale on the Sisters Ranger District.

The are 258 trees or portions of trees being offered for sale in pockets extending from lower Three Creeks Road west nearly to Cold Springs and north to Indian Ford. Most of the trees were downed or damaged in the 1994 Halloween wind storm, according to Alan Heath with the Sisters Ranger District.

"The timber is in scattered pockets over a lot of acres," Heath said.

There is also some pine that was dead prior to being downed in the wind storm, and three dead or dying trees in the Forest Service compound in Sisters that will have to be taken down.

The sale document cautions buyers that blue stain occurs frequently in down timber.
This can lower the value at the mill.

The sale is being sold in "100 cubic feet" units, labeled CCF. There are axproximately 240 CCF in the sale, according to Heath. Timber sales used to be measured in "thousand board feet" units, written as MBF, Heath said. A board foot is a one foot square foot board one inch thick.

One CCF is equal to .61722 MBF.

Heath said the minimum sale price is $198/CCF. The agency expects the timber to bring about $68,000.

The sale deadline is September 26, 1995. Information
on the sale is availalbe at the Sisters Ranger District or the Forest Supervisor's office in Bend.
