Mulch more than a tree

The Deschutes County Public Works Department and The Recycling Team will continue the free Christmas Tree Recycling program for the eighth consecutive year.

Between December 26 and January 31, Knott Landfill and all county transfer stations will accept Christmas trees for recycling at no charge. The fee waiver does not apply to commercial lots.

For a donation, Bend and Redmond residents will have the option of Christmas tree pick-up services provided by local service clubs.

Flocked trees and trees with tinsel are not acceptable for recycling.

"When you recycle your Christmas tree it will be turned into a mulch product for reuse in landscaping and gardening projects," according to Suzanne Johannsen, Executive Director of The Recycling Team.

Last year, several thousand Christmas trees were brought in for recycling. The trees were chipped up with other yard debris for mulch as part of the composting program. The Recycling Team and Instant Landscaping, a local landscaping firm, are working together to mix some of the mulch with organic ingredients to create a very rich topsoil product which is also available for sale.

For information on the mulch or compost, contact The Recycling Team at 388-36388.
