"It's still under construction," Renner said. "We've got one page up with
many more pages to follow. The kids have all kinds of ideas on what's going to
be on there."
P
ublication of the web page is only the first step in the company's plan to
provide access to residents in Sisters, Black Butte and Camp Sherman.
According to Renner, when the 21-student class gets back from spring break they
will begin linking the school's computers to the Internet on a high-speed
internal network.
Then students will begin installing "dial-up" software in student's home
computers to allow students to link up to Outlawnet -- and the whole of the
Internet. Renner said they hope to get that finished in March.
Once the school and its students are hooked up to the Internet, Renner said,
students will start selling non-student subscriptions in Sisters, Black Butte
and Camp Sherman.
Commercial accounts on Outlawnet will be managed by Informat, a local company
that has been working with the school on installation, according to Informat
owner Gary Bickford.
Renner said Outlawnet has experienced some of the delays and equipment problems
experienced by many start-up business and they have fallen a bit behind
schedule.
"We're about a month to a month and a half behind schedule on this," he
noted, but "we're actually a bit under budget right now."
Renner said the class that runs Outlawnet is fairly evenly split between grades
and he expects a core of students to be with the company for the long term.
