Firewood cutting permits available

Deschutes National Forest firewood cutting permits are now on sale for the 1996 firewood season which opens on April 1.

All firewood cutting areas on the Deschutes will be designated. Firewood cutters will be required to have a permit, synopsis and a map in their possession when they go out to cut.

The price is $10 per cord and each household is limited to eight cords for the year. To purchase a permit, a valid drivers license or DMV ID will be required. Cutters can purchase BLM permits at the Crescent Ranger Station and Ochoco National Forest permits at the Redmond Air Center and Bend/Fort Rock Ranger Station.

For more information, contact the specific Ranger District where you plan to cut firewood: Bend/Fort Rock Ranger District 388-5664; Crescent Ranger District 433-2234; and Sisters Ranger District 549-2111.

The 1996 permits may be obtained at Ranger District offices and Redmond Air Center, Monday through Friday 7:45 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Permits are also available at Hoyt's Hardware.
