Of a certain age...
I remember Christmases when I was a kid - when my sister and I got so many presents we'd fall asleep before we could open them all. We always had huge Christmas trees in our two-story living room, fully decorated with ornaments and tinsel galore, and a big twinkling star on top.

Dog friendships
Your furry friend has become a good play buddy with Sparky, your sister's dog. Each time Sparky comes to visit they play chase and romp around the yard for an hour until they are both exhausted from their fun interaction.

Finding the right vet for your pet
You've just adopted a 10-week-old puppy from the local humane society. There's a lot to learn about your new furry friend, and one of the most important decisions you'll make as a pet parent is finding a quality health-care provider for him.

Film can spark 'The Conversation' about end-of-life
I attended the screening of "Final Pose," an award-winning BendFilm 2014 documentary directed by Karen Mellberg of Bend at The Belfry last week. The film concerns the end-of-life journey of Sisters yogi Myra Lani Fisher through her own voice and was filmed during the last few weeks of her life as she was preparing to use Oregon's Death with Dignity (DWD) Act.

Changing of the guard
It was a long way for my son Ross from sitting in the back seat of our 1946 Piper Cub in the early '60s - hauling the stick back and forth to cause the nose to go up and down - to becoming the commanding officer of the 926th Air Force Wing at Nellis AFB last week.

Killing wildlife for family fun
When I was a kid growin' up on the farm in Connecticut, my uncles and I had a tradition of going waterfowl hunting early Thanksgiving morning. When we had our limit in black ducks - the East Coast equivalent of our mallards - we'd come home in mid-afternoon, clean our ducks and prepare them for my grandmother and her daughters (one of whom was my mom) to cook.

Of a certain age...
I love the Christmas season in our small town of tiny lights and big hearts. It starts with the annual lighting of the Christmas tree the day after Thanksgiving, when the city park is packed with happy faces, regardless of the weather.

Stars over Sisters
December is an ideal month in which to view one of the brightest and nearest star clusters in the entire sky. The Pleiades, also known as the Seven Sisters, is located in the constellation Taurus the Bull.

High-tech harness lets you communicate with your dog
If you're a dog parent, you may spend a lot of time wondering what you're dog is actually thinking about. Imagine being able to really know what your furry friend is thinking!

Sisters salutes...
• Hats off to the City of Sisters Public Works Department. A major snowstorm such as the one that blanketed Sisters Country earlier this month puts a heavy strain on a small crew of plow operators. They worked long hours, starting early and ending late, to try to keep up with the rapid pace of the snowfall, then continued to work for days and nights after the storm to get as much of the snow removed as possible.

Keep your pets safe during the holidays
You would like your furry friend to share all the special times with you in your life, including the holidays. But to your pet every day spent with you is a holiday, and he may not be able to appreciate or understand the strange people and noises associated with holiday celebrations.

I wanted to write something about being thankful, but I'm not feeling very thankful as I'm writing this.

The Oregon sun spider
Maggie Saslow is one of those people who wants to know. She is curious about everything that sneaks, crawls, fly, jumps, slithers, runs, hops and otherwise is associated with her little plot on planet Earth.

Cold-weather care for pets
Old Man Winter decided to make an early appearance in Sisters, with an arctic blast dropping temperatures below zero. The first snow blanketed Sisters Country, covering the last of the autumn leaves.

Benefits of having an indoor cat
You've just adopted a 12-week-old kitten from the humane society, and were slowly introducing her to being outdoors during the day. Early one evening, when you went searching for her to come in for dinner, a car whizzed by at high speed and almost struck your furry friend. Your view of having an outdoor cat quickly changed, and now Kitty is an indoor cat.

Of a certain age.....
Somewhere along the way, our society adopted the notion that regret is a negative - something unhealthy that only makes us feel bad and keeps us stuck in the past. For a good share of my life I ascribed to that belief.

The pinyon mouse
This tale of a mouse-in-the-house was started my good friend and fellow airman, Vern Goodsell. He sent me an email a few weeks back with a photo of a dead mouse in a Victor snap-trap, and asked: "OK. What did I catch? Never saw a mouse with such big ears and a slight bush at the end of his tail."

Of a certain age...
Fall is in the air. The leaves are turning yellow, orange, bright red. They are letting go of their branches and flying around with the winds; rising, falling then littering the ground.

Of a certain age...
Good health is so easy to take for granted, until I experience a period of ill health. And sometimes I don't realize how sick I was, until I regain my health. Surgeries that require time for healing and rehabilitation also give pause to consider the importance of health and fitness.
