Furry Friends reaches out a helping paw

For the past 20 years, the Furry Friends Pet Food Drive has been extending holiday cheer to pets in need across Sisters Country. This season the drive will provide food for some 450-plus pets - and they need your help.

Donate dry food (no canned food, please) for dogs or cats at The Nugget Newspaper, 442 E. Main Ave. through December 19.

"Sisters Feed brings in a pallet of dog and cat food each year just for Furry Friends," said Furry Friends founder Kiki Dolson. "For your convenience, the pet food can be purchased there and Sisters Feed will deliver."

Cash donations are especially helpful, as they can be used for targeted food purchases, including specialty foods for pets with allergies and food for senior animals, puppies and kittens. Checks may be mailed to The Nugget, P.O. Box 698, Sisters, OR 97759 or donate online at www.furryfriendsfoundation.org. Contributions are tax-deductable and one hundred percent of donations go to feed the animals.

This spring, Furry Friends became a 501(c)(3) nonprofit as the Furry Friends Foundation, Inc. One of the foundation's missions is to build a year-round pet-food bank for Sisters Country and to provide spay/neuter sponsorships through Bend Spay & Neuter. The foundation is also working to provide emergency medical help for pets.

Food donations for the food bank are accepted year-round.

"I so appreciate all the support we have received these past 20 years to the Furry Friends holiday food drive," said Dolson. "This year we can offer our donors a receipt for their tax-deductible cash donation. Folks can now donate online at our website, too."

Bring your pet for a photo with Santa, Saturday, Dec. 1, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Sisters Art Works open house. Located at the corner of Ash & Adams. (The open house begins at 9 a.m.) All proceeds go to support the Furry Friends Holiday food drive.

Furry Friends will also be at Ray's Food Place on Saturday, December 8, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. selling hand-painted ornaments. They can be personalized with your cat or dog's name for a fun holiday memory. The ornaments are also on sale at The Nugget office from now until December 21.

"As we build followers, we'd really love it if folks would like us on Facebook," Dolson noted. "Also, email us a photo of your pet dressed for the holidays and we'll post them in our photo gallery online at www.furryfriendsfoundation.org."
