Doris Sherman Holmes
March 6, 1923 - December 6, 2013
Doris Holmes of Sisters died peacefully at home on December 6, 2013. She was born March 6, 1923 in Birmingham, Alabama, to Doris and Harris G. Sherman. The family with four daughters moved to Cleveland, Ohio when Doris was 3 years old, then on to California.
Doris attended Beverly Hills High School, where at age 14 she met her future husband, Charles (Harry) See. After graduating from high school she attended Stevens College in Missouri. On June 4, 1942 she and Charles were married. They made their residence in Beverly Hills, California, and within 10 years they had a family of four sons.
After 22 years of marriage, Doris and Harry divorced. In 1965 she married Dan Holmes, a successful rancher from northern California, and they lived in Gerber, California. Dan and Doris loved to travel and lived in England, Sweden, Italy, Spain and France. They were married 11 years when Dan passed away unexpectedly on a trip to London. Eventually, after Dan's death, Doris moved to Sisters, Oregon to be closer to her niece, Barbara, and her husband, Lee Hulse.
Doris was a gracious and elegant lady of many creative talents. She loved to read, sew, quilt, play card games, dominos, cribbage, and Skype her sons and grandchildren. She always found the good in everyone she met, and her love for family and friends was overflowing.
Doris is survived by her four sons: Charles (wife Danielle) See of Vence, France; Richard (wife Jill) See of San Anselmo, California; Harry (wife Maureen) See of Friday Harbor, Washington; and Brian (wife Constance) See of White Fish, Montana. She was the proud grandmother of three and great-grandmother of four, and was the adored aunt of many nieces and nephews.
Doris will be remembered with love, and greatly missed by her family and friends. A gathering of family and friends will be held at a later date to celebrate her amazing life. Memorials can be made to Partners in Care Hospice.
