Stars Over Sisters Star Party
Stargazers are invited to gather at the Sisters Park & Recreation District building on Saturday, October 21 at 7 p.m. for a free presentation and slide show. If weather then permits, plan on heading out to the SHS sports fields to observe the night sky through powerful telescopes. It's the final star party of the season! Info: 541-549-8846.

Thank-you to Firefighters

A thank-you event for wildland firefighters and other public servants for their work during the 2017 fire season is set for 1:30 p.m. Sunday, October 22 at Village Green Park. The community is invited to bring thank-you notes and drawings by kids, plus a homemade dessert. Volunteers will serve donated ice cream and the desserts, then distribute the notes to fire departments and the public service agencies who assisted. Halloween at the Fire Hall

Kids and families are invited to a howling good time at the Sisters-Camp Sherman Fire Hall from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, October 31. Check out the new carnival games and - if you dare - venture into the haunted maze at the annual event. Enjoy refreshments, prizes & candy. Annual Halloween Parade

Get your costumes ready for the Sisters Halloween Parade! Kids ages one to 10, with their adults, should meet at Fir Street Park at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, October 31 to trick-or-treat through downtown. Costumes and pre-registration required; forms are available at the Sisters Library or Sisters public schools. Please bring a non-perishable food item for the Sisters Food Bank. Live Radio Performance

At 7 p.m. on Friday, October 27 at Sisters Community Church, Sisters Classic Old-Time Radio Experience (SCORE) will perform a live radio broadcast from the old-time radio shows "Inner Sanctum" and "Suspense." Many of the sound effects will be created right on stage. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and donations are always accepted gladly. For more information call 541-548-0601.

Animal Blessing

Like humans, animals share in God's creation. Come to the first blessing of all animals at 11 a.m. Saturday, October 21 at the Episcopal Church of the Transfiguration. Spinners/Weavers Group

The Central Oregon Spinners and Weavers Guild will meet at the Ray's Food Place community room on Saturday, October 28 from 1 to 4 p.m. for a panel discussion on spinning different types of fiber. All fiber enthusiasts are welcome! For additional information, please call 541-639-3217.

Walk/Jog-a-thon Fundraiser

On Friday, October 20 from 10 to 11 a.m., the students of Sisters Christian Academy will be walking and jogging at the Sisters High School track. Operation Christmas Child

Operation Christmas Child is a project of Samaritan's Purse. Shoeboxes filled with school supplies, hygiene items, and toys are delivered to children around the world to demonstrate God's love in a tangible way. Sisters Science Club Event

On Tuesday, October 24, Sisters Science Club presents "The Neuroscience of Pleasure and Love," a discussion of creativity and the human brain with Dr. Larry Sherman, OHSU neuroscientist. The pub opens at 6 p.m. for social hour with the lecture at 7 p.m. $5 requested donation at the door; club donors, teachers and students are free. Food Assistance at the Kiwanis Food Bank

Your family may be eligible for food assistance at the Sisters Kiwanis Food Bank. Eligibility rules may be found online at fns.usda.gov/tefap or visit the food bank for complete information. The food bank is located at Main Avenue and Oak Street and is open once a week, Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. You may also get cat and dog food weekly during those hours at no charge, provided by Furry Friends Foundation of Sisters.

Magazine & Video Downloads Lab

At 10:30 a.m. at the Sisters Library on Saturday, October 21, a free lab is offered where adults may learn how to use RBDigital, Flipster, and Hoopla to download magazines and videos. For more info call 541-312-1072.

Senior Luncheons and More

Sisters-area seniors are invited to join others at the Sisters Senior Luncheon! Lunch is served every Tuesday at noon at Sisters Community Church with a $3.50 suggested donation for those over 60. The espresso hour runs 11 a.m. to noon, and BINGO is played after lunch until 2:30 p.m. A free blood pressure clinic is offered the second Tuesday of the month, 11 a.m. to noon. Questions? Robert (Bob) Harris Memorial

A memorial for Robert (Bob) Harris will be held in Sisters for family and friends at Village Green Park on Saturday, October 21 at 1:30 p.m., rain or shine. Please come out and celebrate a life remembered.

October Art in the Library

This month in the community room of the Sisters Library, the Central Oregon Spinners and Weavers Guild is displaying members' fiber art. In the computer room, Quilts for Kids, a group of quilters that make children's quilts to donate to kids in need, is exhibiting some that the group will be donating this year. Writers: Meet with Others!

Tuesdays from October 31 through November 28, from 2 to 3:30 p.m. at Suttle Tea, the Nanowrimo Writers Group invites writers working on their novel to meet with other writers for support (no critique). Sisters-area families: need your dog or cat spayed or neutered? Come into the Nugget office and fill out the Furry Friends Foundation form; you'll then be approved to contact Bend Spay & Neuter Clinic to schedule the surgery. Furry Friends pays all costs, plus microchipping, vaccinations, even dog license! Note: you must complete the form before you're approved to schedule. For additional information call 541-549-9941.

Death, Dying and Great Compassion in Buddhism
