8/9/2013 7:53:00 AM Containment pushed to Sunday on Green Ridge Fire
The Green Ridge Fire isn't making things easy on firefighters.
Tough terrain and adverse weather conditions have made it hard to corral the blaze 14 miles northwest of Sisters and about 3 miles northeast of Camp Sherman. The fire is now estimated at 1,150 acres and 50 percent containment. Full containment is estimated for Sunday, August 11. (Click link below for map).
Firefighters have been working to keep ahead of a finger of fire on the southeast corner of the blaze that keeps extending itself eastward, spotting ahead as far as 3/4 mile.
There are 581 personnel assigned to the fire and seven helicopters have been flying in repeatedly to help ground crews corral spot fires. The fire has cost $2.9 million so far.
While some closures are in place due to firefighting operations, Camp Sherman has seen relatively little impact from smoke and businesses continue to be open and operating. Closures include:
* Forest Road 14 from the 900 junction to the 1490 Junction
* The East Metolius Trail
* Lower Bridge Campground
* Wizard Falls Fish Hatchery
* Allen Springs Campground
* Pioneer Ford Campground.
A community meeting is scheduled for Friday, August 9, at 6:30 p.m. at the Community Hall in Camp Sherman to provide updates on the fire status.
