The defense had a stellar performance in the Outlaws' 55-8 victory over the Hidden Valley (HV) Mustangs at home on Friday, November 16. The defense gave the Outlaws five turnovers that resulted in touchdowns for Sisters.
Carroll Gryder finished the night with five tackles and two key interceptions. Dominic Nieri recorded an interception and a fumble recovery. The defensive front line was led by Thad Anderson with seven tackles and a quarterback sack. Ian Stark recorded four tackles, a quarterback sack and a fumble recovery.
Linebackers Taylor Davenport, Nate Emberton and Marcus Gaboni did a tremendous job. Emberton recorded nine tackles before leaving the game in the first half with an injury. Gaboni had seven tackles and a fumble recovery, and Davenport had five tackles.
Coach Bob Macauley told The Nugget that two of the best defensive performances of the night came from Shawn Maurer and Tanner Hodges. Both Maurer and Hodges notched six tackles for the night.
Nate Jackson had a great game at safety and applied some extremely violent hits to the Mustangs.
The defense limited Hidden Valley to 106 total yards in the first three quarters and continually set up the offense in great field position.
The offense got started early when Gryder intercepted a pass on the Mustang's first series of plays. Sisters took over the ball on Hidden Valley's 40-yard line.
On the first play from the line of scrimmage, Jarred Hasskamp threw a 40-yard touchdown strike to Jackson. Hodges kick for the extra point (PAT) was good and with less than one minute gone in the game Sisters took a 7-0 lead.
Sisters held HV on their second series, forced the punt and took possession on their own 27-yard line. After 10 plays the Outlaws were down to the 13-yard line where they were faced with a fourth and 12. Hasskamp threw a perfect pass to Hodges for the first down on the one-yard line. Cory McCaffrey ran it in for the TD, and the PAT was good. Sisters extended their lead to 14-0.
With 11:07 left in the half, the Outlaws got the ball back on the 16-yard line and marched 84 yards in seven plays with Emery Meyer hauling in a 37-yard TD pass from Hasskamp. The kick was good, and Sisters extended their lead to 21-0.
Immediately following the TD, Stark had a fumble recovery on the 16-yard line which put the Outlaws back in business again. Three plays later McCaffrey scored behind the blocking of Jackson, Gryder and Davenport. The extra point was blocked, but the Outlaws went up 27-0. The teams traded possessions twice before the horn sounded, ending the half.
Sisters started the third quarter a little sluggish and squandered a couple of opportunities before getting back on track with six minutes remaining in the quarter.
Gryder came up with his second interception of the night to stop the Mustang drive, and Sisters got the ball on their own 15-yard line. McCaffrey reeled off a 22-yard run behind the blocking of Tyler Miller and Tyson Edmunson and then came back behind Evan Eady for a 64-yard TD run. The PAT failed, but Sisters went up 33-0.
The Outlaw defense kept getting stronger and wore out the Mustangs. Hidden Valley was forced to punt, and the Outlaw offense took over the ball at mid-field.
On the third play of the series, Hasskamp found Gryder 40 yards downfield all alone in the end zone for another TD. Hasskamp threw to McCaffrey for the two point conversion, and Sisters went up 41-0.
With 38 seconds left in the third quarter, Nieri recovered a fumble on the Outlaw's 48-yard line. In three plays the ball was down to the six-yard line before the quarter came to an end.
On the first play of the fourth quarter, McCaffrey ran the ball in for the touchdown. Hodges kicked the PAT, and the Outlaws put the game out of reach at 48-0. Sisters scored one more touchdown when Nick Head ran it in from the seven-yard line to cap the Outlaw scoring. The kick was good, and Sisters pushed to a 55-0 advantage.
The Mustangs managed one TD with three minutes left in the game, and then the Outlaws ran out the clock for the 55-8 playoff win.
Hasskamp completed 10 of 20 passes for 218 yards and three touchdowns. McCaffrey rushed 22 times for 268 yards and four touchdowns. Receivers Jackson, Gryder and Meyer all caught TD passes.
"It was a very, very physical game, and I'm proud of our offensive line, Tyler Miller, Tyson Edmunson, Evan Eady, Thomas Arends, Andrew Enger and Andrew Goodwin, who played outstanding and beat the Mustangs up front," said Macauley.
Sisters will face North Bend at home in the quarterfinals on Friday, November 23, at 7 p.m.
