A beautiful day and traditional Sisters community spirit combined on Friday to fill up the greens at Aspen Lakes Golf Course for the annual Outlaw Open.

The golf event raises funds for Sisters High School athletic programs.

There were a total of 34 teams, including some out-of-town golfers who showed up to golf to find the course closed to the public. Kelly Cyrus reported that the golfers, once apprised of the event, decided it was a good cause and a good time, so they signed up for the tournament.

"What a beautiful day for this," said Outlaws Volleyball Coach Miki McFadden.

Her squad was one of the teams that worked on the tournament as a way of earning its proceeds. Each team that participated in set-up, takedown, dinner service for post-tourney golfers, sales of hole sponsorships and other activities will receive a portion of the thousands of dollars that the tournament raises.

A silent auction featured everything from electrical services to personal training services and vacation packages. The large number of sponsorships and auction donations, along with the day's use of Aspen Lakes' facilities, reflected the generous community support of sports programs "as with anything to do with kids in Sisters," as volunteer Sue Boettner noted.
