Outlaws stay tied for first place
The Outlaws posted two wins on the road this past week to push their league record to 7-1, which kept them tied with Sutherlin for first place in conference play.

Sisters defeated the Huskies 43-36 at Sweet Home on Tuesday, February 6, and three days later they tallied a 64-48 road win at Junction City (JC).

Lady Outlaws snap losing streak
The Lady Outlaws snapped their four-game losing streak with a 46-30 win over the Huskies at Sweet Home on Tuesday, February 6, and are now 2-5 in conference play. The winning didn't last, though, as the Outlaws were defeated 62-26 by the Tigers at Junction City on Friday.

Swim team sends qualifiers to State
The Sisters High School girls swim team will be sending a solid contingent to the OSAA State Swimming Championships this weekend after finishing third at the District meet, which served as the qualifier for state. The meet was held February 9 and 10 at the Albany Swim Center.

Alpine skiers race under perfect conditions
Clear, cold weather created ideal race conditions on Mt. Bachelor's Cliffhanger run on Saturday, February 10, for the OSAA giant slalom race. Warmer temperatures earlier in the week added moisture to the snow, and colder temperatures on Saturday froze the moisture, which created a nice hard crust for the race

Seventeen Outlaws participated in the OSAA 4A Special District #2 Regional Tournament held at Sweet Home High School on Friday and Saturday, February 9 and 10.

Skiers improve with every race
The Alpine Ski Team raced under mixed conditions in their slalom race at Mr. Bachelor on Saturday, February 3. Skiers raced in misty rain, sun, and wind, and despite the weather, skiers continued to improve.

Fast-paced game ends in victory
Sisters held on at the end to earn a 47-45 victory over the visiting Cottage Grove (CG) Lions on Friday, February 2. It was a tight, intense, action-packed contest from buzzer to buzzer.

Local man continues baseball odyssey
Gene Frechette knows something about baseball. Frechette, a former resident of Sisters now living in Eagle Crest, has spent 55 years associated with professional baseball, and he's on a mission to preserve the arms of young pitchers.

Frechette is among the deans of professional pitching instruction.

Running commentary
I am viewing this winter's mildness as a sort of an apology from Mother Nature for last year's historic and long-lasting snowfall. And though we all want the snowpack up in the mountains to build up soon for the sake of water supplies, I am hoping this spring-like winter is not going to turn into a winter-like spring.

Outlaws alpine skiers face rough conditions
The Alpine ski team participated in a slalom race on the I-5 run at Mt. Bachelor on Saturday, January 27. Conditions were more wintry than the skiers have seen this season; snow fell heavily at times, and skiers also had to deal with strong winds.

Girls basketball struggles
The Lady Outlaws continued to struggle to keep up with league foes this past week, and lost both their games - a 55-23 loss to the Falcons at Elmira on Tuesday, January 23, and a 52-24 road loss to Sutherlin on Friday.

Mixed week on hardwood for Outlaws
The Outlaws have been hammering their opponents on the hardwood, and this past week started out no different. Sisters defeated the Falcons 60-41 at Elmira on Tuesday, January 23. Three days later, though, the Outlaws fell hard in a 51-25 loss to the Bulldogs at Sutherlin.

The Outlaws' battle with Junction City (JC) on the home court on Friday, January 19, was intense and action-packed, with Sisters posting the win on a shot that fell at the buzzer. Three days earlier the Outlaws tallied a 54-38 win at home over the Huskies.

Off-season winter hiking
As is often the case, I planned an extensive vacation trip for late fall to escape the dreary days between hiking and skiing seasons. I returned, however, only to find that the snow season has yet to materialize. So, my hiking friend and I have been out on the trails again; and I've had quite a bit of feedback that indicates we are far from alone in making some lemonade out of a lemon of a snow season.

Boys basketball squeaks by Cottage Grove to win league opener
The boys basketball squad lost 67-64 to Madras in their last pre-season game on Tuesday, January 9. They staved off the Lions at Cottage Grove in the league opener on Friday, three days later, with a 50-48 win.

Friday's win against the Lions was an intense contest, with lead changes throughout.
