  • Stars over Sisters

    Cole Gonzales|Updated Jul 3, 2013

Gaze skyward after nightfall in July and you will see a celestial crown. Corona Borealis (Latin for "the Northern Crown") is a constellation that consists of seven stars arranged in a semicircle. It is bordered by Boötes to the west, Hercules to the east and Serpens Caput to the south. From our latitude here in Central Oregon, it will appear nearly overhead at about 9 p.m. In Greek mythology, Corona Borealis represented a crown that was given by Dionysus (god of the grape... Full story

  • Running commentary

    Charlie Kanzig|Updated Jul 3, 2013

In the past month I have had experiences that have given me some new perspectives surrounding my life as a runner. As a young man, I qualified for the Boston Marathon a number of times, but had agreed to only travel there when a good friend also qualified. Sadly, he never did, and life went on without me taking part in the epic race. Two weeks ago, I enjoyed a trip to Boston and Cambridge for a school counseling institute sponsored by Harvard and the College Board. On my... Full story

John Jeffries Norton of Black Butte Ranch passed away in his sleep early Sunday, June 23. John displayed grace, dignity and courage in the face of Lewy Body Dementia, a disease that takes all of that from you. He was an inspiration to all who knew him. John was born on March 9, 1941 in Aberdeen, Washington, to Fred and June Norton. He grew up in the Magnolia neighborhood in Seattle. He graduated from Queen Anne High School and later the University of Washington, a member of... Full story

  • An easy hike from Round Lake to Square lake

    Craig Eisenbeis|Updated Jul 3, 2013

The Round Lake to Square Lake trail is an easy wilderness hike of about two miles each way. I hear from quite a few people who tell me that they read my hiking columns regularly, but protest that they feel too old, too slow, too out-of-shape - or too whatever - to actually do the hikes. Well, if you fall into that category and would like to get back in the game, this is a great "starter hike." Ten years ago, this spot fell victim to our seemingly endless litany of severe... Full story

  • The coming of the snakefly

    Jim Anderson, Correspondent|Updated Jul 3, 2013

My old pal, Kris Kristovich, Sisters High School track coach and splendid photographer, sends me the best photos from nature about once a week. The other day he sent a bunch of warbler photos that contained a male Wilson's warbler singing, about knocked my eye out. I thought I could hear it; it was so wonderful. Once in a while, he has a photo he can't ID. The photo he sent was that of a snakefly, similar to that above. I was going to use his excellent image for this story,... Full story
