  • SPRD invites feedback on strategic plan

    Sue Anderson|Updated Nov 19, 2019

Sisters Park & Recreation District (SPRD) wants to hear from the community before they finalize their new two-year strategic plan. To that end, there will be two public meetings on Wednesday, December 4; one during the day, 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m., and one in the evening, 5:30-7 p.m., both at SPRD. After receiving public input through a needs-assessment survey several months ago, the board and staff have been busy identifying top priorities on which to focus over the next two years, 2020-2022. The draft of priorities is what SPRD... Full story

  • Five eagles get their wings

    Sue Anderson|Updated Jun 19, 2019

Last Saturday evening five local boys from troop 188 of Sisters received their Eagle Scout award, the highest rank in the Boy Scouts. The Court of Honor was held at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and included a dinner, display and the presentation. Close to 100 people attended, filling the church chapel. To achieve this status, boys must be active members of the Boy Scouts who have advanced through all of the previous ranks. They then have to accomplish all th... Full story

Members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints brought their rakes, pitchforks, chainsaws, shovels, pickups, wheelbarrows and gloves to Sisters Middle School last Saturday morning to give the school grounds a facelift. "Every year our church does a community-service project, and this year the middle school got our help," said organizer Swen Petterson. • Folks swarm for bee demonstration

    Sue Anderson|Updated May 7, 2013

Keeping bees is a hot pursuit nowadays, ever since it became known that bee hives were collapsing at an alarming rate. Nature's best pollinators were dying by the millions for reasons unknown and people wanted to save these helpful insects. And having your own backyard honey supply is a bonus. Eric and Peter Liddell of Sisters love local honey and wanted to have enough hives to supply themselves and their extended family (there's a lot of them) with plenty of the liquid gold.... Full story

  • Sisters youth reenact Mormon Trek

    Sue Anderson|Updated Jul 31, 2012

Load 'Em Up! Move 'Em Out! Westward Ho! That classic call took on new meaning to more than 149 youth and 50 adult members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in the Central Oregon area who participated in a four-day trek to gain some pioneer experience and perspective. In the mid 1800s, many Mormon families chose to endure the hardships of traveling thousands of miles by foot, pulling and/or pushing a handcart in order to start a new life in the West, free of pe... Full story

  • Greenhouse gardening is a must

    Sue Anderson|Updated May 15, 2012

Last year my family helped me build a greenhouse. It simply was the only solution to having our own fresh tomatoes, peppers, basil, etc. because trying to grow these cold-sensitive veggies in the great out-of-doors was out of the question. In Sisters it can freeze any night of the year. It was 19 degrees at our house this morning (May 10). Even the tougher kale, spinach, onions, etc. will wilt under that chilling temperature. There are lots of greenhouse designs out there and... Full story

  • Mittleider Method will work magic

    Sue Anderson|Updated May 8, 2012

Gardening in Sisters Country can be hard, hard, hard! In Sunset's "Western Garden Book," one of the definitive go-to manuals for the West, there's no section that adequately addresses long cold springs, crazy night-and-day temperature fluctuations, and freezes in July. So, whenever something comes along that I believe can improve my odds of actually harvesting fresh vegetables, I jump on it. Aside from protecting from the elements and extending the season, which will be... Full story

  • Local LDS church to expand

    Sue Anderson|Updated Sep 24, 2002

Ground-breaking for the new addition of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Sisters. On Sunday afternoon, Gordon Sage, president of the Sisters Branch of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, located on Trinity Way, broke ground with a golden shovel to symbolically launch the construction of a new addition to the church meetinghouse. With an unusually warm September sun pushing the temperature into the 80s, the congregation sat comfortably indoors for the opening talks then moved outside to observe t... Full story

  • New record set on butterfly count

    Sue Anderson|Updated Jul 15, 1997

Hot sunny weather last Saturday provided perfect conditions for holding the 11th annual Metolius Butterfly Count. Thirteen adults and as many children swept up Green Ridge and around the Metolius netting butterflies for identification and tallying. All butterflies were released back to the wild. "We recorded 61 species this year which broke last year's record by nine," reported count leader Sue Anderson. Anderson attributes the high numbers to an increase in rainfall in recent years. "When plants, especially wildflowers, have... Full story
