Following a successful community fundraising effort, senior banners last week began flying high at Sisters High School and soon will be hung on downtown lampposts to celebrate graduation week and the Class of 2021.

On Wednesday, May 12, SHS custodians stepped onto hydraulic scissor lifts and headed for the “clouds” light fixtures above the school’s main commons area. Kevin Madsen and Craig Starnes hung the 102 senior banners—each featuring a different student—on tension lines crisscrossing the lofty ceiling.

The colorful display will honor the senior class on campus for about two weeks. Then, about a week before graduation, the banners will be relocated to downtown lampposts to further recognize the Class of 2021 and showcase Sisters’ hometown pride.

After graduation, each student will be able to pick up his or her banner to have as a keepsake.

The senior banner project, now in its second year, is a collaborative effort led by SHS and the local nonprofit Citizens4Community. A Go Fund Me online campaign held in April helped push the project just over its total fundraising goal of $2,850.

More than 40 individuals and several organizations — including the Sisters Rodeo, Black Butte Ranch, and the City of Sisters — have helped make the 2021 project possible.

Additional information about the project is available online at citizens4community.com.
