“Ma Cobb,” portrayed by Jan Hodgers, spun stories of Sisters’ pioneer days for students from Black Butte School during a field trip to Camp Polk Cemetery last week.
Students from Camp Sherman’s Black Butte School enjoyed a history field trip last week to the Sisters History Museum and Camp Polk Cemetery.
Museum volunteers, some dressed in period costumes, shared information and exhibits about area Native Americans, early explorers and settlers, and life at early Camp Polk and Sisters. The students experienced a pioneer relay game – carrying eggs on spoons. They also toured the original six blocks of downtown Sisters, visiting significant historic sites.
At Camp Polk Cemetery, they heard stories from “Ma Cobb” about early area residents buried in the cemetery. Jan Hodgers, the president of the historical society and a descendant of early Sisters settlers the Hindman, Cobb, and Fryrear families, portrayed Ma Cobb.
This was the first school field trip hosted by the museum due to this past year’s COVID closures. They look forward to welcoming visitors this spring and summer and more school field trips.
